Description
NGC has graded this attractive 1899 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle Coin as Mint State 62.
These coins were designed by Chief Engraver James Longacre and were minted during the period of 1849 – 1907. The weight of the coin is 0.9675 oz and contains 90% fine gold. This coin is, beyond doubt, a collectors’ item. Only $2.5, $5 and $10 denominations coin were being produced by the US Mint. It is only after the California gold rush that the Mint started producing $20 Double Eagle liberty Gold Coin.
The obverse side of the coin depicts the Lady Liberty wearing a pearl studded crown with the word ‘Liberty’ engraved following by the year of issue. The reverse side shows the Great Seal of the United States featuring a eagle with a shield on its breast below the ring of 13 stars. The words “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the head of eagle. The words “TWENTY DOLLARS” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are written along the edge.
